The author sets out to explore southeastern Alaska in the late 1800s with a companion and a dog named Stickeen. Dangerously rife with crevasses and glaciers, the landscape of Alaska posed a serious obstacle to progress of the party. However, man and dog worked together toward a common cause.

The battle of Okinawa was the bloodiest of all in the Pacific War. US Marines invaded the island amphibiously. Military personnel and civilian casualties were enormous, and this battle played a large role in the decision to use an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
